Tips

Brainstorm:
Think of ways you can host a stand or other event in support of the "Every Girl Can Make a Difference" campaign and make a list of all the people you could call upon for support. Think about if you want to hold a large event or something smaller - make sure it is manageable for your abilities and interests.

Set a Goal:
Set your own fundraising goal. Whether it is $50 or $10,000, your goal will motivate you and others to rally together to reach it! Every contribution is greatly appreciated and will make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Choose a Date, Time and Location:
Decide a date, time and location that work best for your stand or event and be sure to include this information in any information you send out our post.

Here are some suggested locations (Gathering places and high traffic areas are best):

- Campus quad, student center, sorority house
- Front yard of prominent home
- In front of a local business
- Local mall, outdoor shopping center or farmer's market
- Town center or busy downtown area
- Beach or boardwalk
- Park or playground
- Town fair or other celebration

Once you've selected a location, determine who to contact for permission to hold a charitable fundraising event. If it is a public location such as a park or university property, inquire with the town or the university department that manages that location. If it is a private location such as a local business, contact the business owner or manager.

When asking for permission, be sure to tell them about the purpose of "Every Girl Can Make a Difference" and that the money raised will fund pediatric cancer research. Tell them or provide them with information on Alex's story and how you're trying to make a difference.

Rain Date: use your best judgment as to whether you should plan for a rain date. You can always state that your stand will be held rain or shine. Some of Alex's Lemonade Stand's most successful lemonade stands were held in the pouring rain! If your event is outside be prepared with either an inside area or tents for shelter.

Recruit People:
More than one person may be needed to organize and run your event. Start getting as many people involved as possible. They can help you plan, donate to your efforts and bring their friends to your stand.

Here's a simple checklist of the materials and supplies you'll need:

Get the Word Out:
Make sure to make some noise about your event. Post your flyers and additional signage at dorms, student centers, dining halls, recreation centers and bulletin boards. Also post flyers in the neighborhood and on community boards at local businesses or anywhere people will see them. Be sure to obey the local laws regarding the posting of flyers and ask permission before posting a flyer at a local business. Make sure you make your postings several days before the event to have the greatest number of people see it.

Use the Media:
You can do more than just post flyers. Use the media to get the word out. Contact the campus newspaper, radio and TV station about your event plans. Call the local media including community newspapers and local television stations to let them know about the event and why it is important to the community.

The web can be a powerful way to get your story out. Talk about the event on your favorite websites and other places where you spend time on the web. Use e-mail to encourage friends and family to visit the event and encourage them to forward the message to others. You can also post information about your lemonade stand on college or community online billboards.
